In the Book of Ephesians, the Apostle Paul shares a profound insight that many of us find challenging to believe about ourselves and even how we assume God sees us:
“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago.” [Eph. 2:10]
Yes, it says 'masterpiece'! We often picture a masterpiece as a stunning piece of art that showcases the immense talent and dedication of its maker. It reflects the skill, passion, and creativity that go into crafting something truly unique and special. Some of these masterpieces are so famous and inspiring that people travel from all around the world to visit and experience them firsthand! We might think of God's masterpieces as what we see in the natural world. But God considers us to be His masterpieces.
Despite this, many of us still find it difficult to see ourselves this way. Given what we know about ourselves, it’s natural to question what truly qualifies us as God's ‘masterpieces.’ Scripture tells us what to focus on so that we can believe this about ourselves. Focusing on our past, mistakes, and limitations makes it hard to recognize how anyone—ourselves included, or even God—could see us as the incredible masterpieces we are meant to be.
But here’s the beautiful truth: Scripture teaches us that God doesn’t dwell on our past, faults, or shortcomings when He looks at us. Rather, God brings forth something NEW within us, transforming our lives into a work of art. While we might dwell on our past actions, which are behind us, God joyfully focuses on what He has created in us, which is fresh and full of promise.
For this to become real to us, regardless of how long we felt otherwise, we must change our mindset and start thanking God for the unique way that He made us —and Scripture says that we need God’s help to think this way:
" I will give thanks to You, because I am awesomely and wonderfully made; wonderful are Your works, and my soul knows it very well." [Psa 139:14]
“Don’t continue to copy the behaviors and conform to customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.” [Rom. 12:2]
There's an old saying that goes, “beauty is in the eye of the beholder." This means that what one person considers beautiful is subjective and can vary greatly from person to person. Scripture makes it clear who our beholder truly is:
“The eyes of the LORD search the whole earth in order to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him…” [2 Chron. 16:9]
When we place our faith in God, it opens the door for Him to work wonderfully in our lives, helping us realize the best versions of ourselves with all the potential we hold.
So remember, according to God, you are His priceless work of art!
