Entertainment Strikes Back | The Biblical Perspective on Fair Wages

We’ve been following the labor disputes with The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers…

What is being fought for appears to echo a timeless biblical principle… and is something that a great writer (whose work inspired many film concepts) noted centuries ago:

In the Canterbury Tales (Summoner’s Tale), Geoffrey Chaucer wrote:

“You wished you had our labour all for naught.
But the High God, Who all this world has wrought,
Says that the workman’s worthy of his hire.”

Here, Chaucer quoted Jesus Christ about the ‘workman being worthy of their hire…’ (Luk. 10:7)

The Apostle Paul stated:

“For the Scripture says, “You must not muzzle an ox to keep it from eating as it treads out the grain. (Deut. 25:34)” And in another place (Luk. 10:7), “Those who work deserve their pay!” [1 Tim. 5:18]

The major film studios may not know Scripture well - BUT they definitely know Chaucer… It is ironic that something noted back in the 14th century is still an issue in 2023!

The makers of the content which educate and entertain are worthy of their hire and deserve just payment for their artistry!

Playing by the book is Being Fair!
