TEMPERANCE

SYNONYMS: moderation, self-discipline / control

ANTONYMS: indulgent, undisciplined, unrealistic

#TEMPERANCE is a profound word in Scripture; known today as #selfcontrol or #moderation.

It is a necessary #virtue for the spiritual maturity of every believer:

“Teach the older men to be temperate, worthy of #respect, self-controlled, and sound in faith, in love and in endurance.” [Tit. 2:2]

“In the same way, the women must be dignified, not slanderers, but temperate and trustworthy in all things.” [1 Tim. 3:11]

⚪️ Lacking temperance ultimately causes ruin in a persons life:

“A persons life who lacks self-discipline will become like a ruined city with broken down walls” [Prov. 25:28]

⚪️ Temperance also prevents mistaking self-indulgence for liberty:

“You might say - ‘I have the right to do anything’, but not everything is right nor beneficial. Though I have the right to do many things, I choose not to allow myself to be controlled by my own passions.” [1 Cor. 6:12]

“God has provided everything we need to live a life that pleases Him. It was all given to us by God's own power, when we learned He had invited us to share in His wonderful goodness. And because of His glory and excellence, He has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share His divine nature and escape rampant corruption in the world caused by destructive human desires.” [2 Ptr. 1:3,4]

⚪️ Applying Temperance:

“In view of all this, make every effort to respond to God’s promises. Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with Gods quality of love for everyone.” [2 Ptr. 1:5-7]

⚪️ The Benefits:
“For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep your life from being ineffective and unproductive in demonstrating your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” [2 Ptr. 1:8]

God has ‘tempered’ together in the Scriptures, all the virtues necessary for a truly powerful life!
